PROVENANCE
2010 Ballarat PINOT NOIR
VINEYARD
Grown in the cool, windswept Scotsburn region south of Ballarat, this vineyard at 520m height is located just south-east of Mt Buningyong. Planted in 1997 on old goldfield - ordovician soils around 450 million years old, the vines do it pretty tough here, but that is not a bad thing. The VSP (vertical shoot positioning) trellis ensures good sunlight onto the fruit clusters aiding the ripening process and the cold nights make for great natural acid/pH balance at harvest. We rate this terroir so highly that in May 2010 we purchased 75 acres next door where we intend to grow grapes and make wine into our dotage.
HARVEST & WINEMAKING
Here at Provenance Wines we rate vintage 2010 amongst the best. The major growing season events at Scotsburn were good rainfall in September & November, that got the vines away well, and cooler conditions in March which slowed ripening. A late April harvest saw fruit handpicked with abundant flavour. Winemaking included partial wholebunch, ~33% into the fermenters, indigenous alcoholic & malolactic fermentation, with mlf taking place in barriques where the wine was matured for 10 months.
TASTING NOTE
APPEARANCE
Brilliant, garnet red.
NOSE
Bright cherry fruit aroma cut with a minerally undercurrant. Expressive, refined and utterly pretty.
PALATE
True to aroma the youthful, spicy fruit character is elegant and fine. This is a pure Pinot Noir that dances like a ballarina but carries its vintage hallmark, oodles of fine-grained tannin. This tannin combined with its fine natural acid will ensure excellent aging over the medium term. A fine, rewarding Pinot Noir.
FOOD MATCHES
Peking duck.
This wine was specially selected by us to represent its regional provenance. Only 50 dozen was produced.
